Identifying High Impact Industries in the Northeast Region

Investigator: Dr. James Booker

Dr. James Booker and his students partnered with the National Environmental Technology for Waste Prevention Institute (NETI) at the University of Massachusetts to identify "high impact" industries in the Northeast Region. The project was funded by the Department of Energy (DOE) and by the State Energy Offices in the region (including NYSERDA). The purpose of the project was to improve the resource efficiency of the nation's most energy and waste intensive industries. The project report was published in October 2000. The project identified the manufacturing industries with the largest economic, energy, and environmental impacts in the seven northeastern states as a whole, identifying regional priority industries. The goal was to provide information on manufacturing industries in the northeast that would assist the DOE and the states in identifying regional priority industries, targeting energy and waste reduction efforts in the region, and helping to forge the partnerships necessary for successful State Industries of the Future Programs.

The overall environmental impact of industries in the northeast region is summarized in Table 14 (below). The numerical maximum rankings were summed across the three environmental indicators to obtain a sense of the relative environmental impact of each sector.

CEER is funded in large part by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
