Bill Castle Speaks about Pollywogg HollerThe first program in CEER's fall 2004 eco design series was Alfred alumnus Bill Castle's talk about the design and construction of local landmark Pollywogg Holler on Wed., Sept. 29, 2004. The Pollywogg Holler Ecolodge features passive solar, photovoltaics for lighting, music and fans, composting toilet (Clivus Multrum, owner built), raised bed gardens utilizing lawn clipping compost. At Pollywogg Holler, the Castle family brings together tourism, sustainability and the environment to offer an escape from the noise of civilization. Their example of old-school craftsmanship and independent living makes the most of solar electricity, a compostable recycling system, organic gardening and gravity fed spring water. Timber and stone, stained glass windows, sky lights and delightful wood carvings adorn every corner of this rustic paradise. Work of over 100 artists is displayed along the trails that lead to the main lodge which is accompanied by a Finnish style family sauna.
