Alfred Fuel Cell Materials WorkshopA workshop on materials issues for fuel cells was held at Alfred on Thurs., Oct. 14, 2004. The workshop wass sponsored by the NYS College of Ceramics at Alfred University. For more information about the workshop, contact Marlene Wightman, Director, Continuing Education/Industrial Outreach, wightman@alfred.edu. Click here to view the agenda. Fuel cell systems have been brought to the forefront of emerging power generation technologies by the world energy crisis. They offer high energy conversion efficiencies, extremely low on-site environmental pollution and very low noise. Materials issues dominate the challenges associated with their practical implementation, including high initial cost compared to conventional power generation systems, packaging, and durability and reliability. Significant efforts are underway both in industry and in universities to improve this important new technology and make it marketable within this decade. There are several car manufacturers as well as utility servicing companies conducting advance research and development in this field. | ||
